Just east of Bakersfield, lies the small town of Arvin, a city of around 16,000 people. The city’s proud agricultural heritage is showcased by the abundance of dairies, farms and agricultural crops that surround the city.

Named after its early 19th century postmaster, Arvin Richardson, the town of Arvin is “nestled against Bear Mountain.” Aptly named, the Bear Mountain Elementary School is part of the bigger school district, Arvin Union School District; the school district works towards ensuring that the intellectual, developmental and emotional needs are met for every student.

Groups like the Chamber of Commerce and the South Valley neighborhood partnership serve as a source of inspiration and accountability for the city’s resources. The interconnectedness of the city and its residents is evident in the city has supported the school system, the numerous community events and its organizations. The city’s rapid growth hasn’t interfered with the quality of life its residents enjoy; the city hosts two popular community events, the Wildflower Festival and the Annual Crab Feed.

The Wildflower Festival celebrates the prevalence of wild flowers, many of which grow along the base of Bear Mountain; dotted with food booths, the mostly Spanish music and entertainment held at Smotherman Park, is representative of the city’s diversity. A carnival and petting zoo make the event popular among Arvin’s youngest residents.

A popular spot for entertainment, Sycamore Canyon Golf Course offers a number of tournaments and events each year. A small café, an old fashioned drive-in and a country kitchen offer an array of dining options consistent with small rural town. The city embraces its informal aire; residents crowd the local Bear Mountain Pizza for birthday parties and family gatherings. Mexican food constitutes the area’s specialty… small shops and market-like stores are Arvin’s stronghold.

Housing prices are substantially lower than neighboring city, Bakersfield. Upscale housing has permeated the housing market and newer homes on streets like Blue Loop Lane take advantage of the small lake. Custom built homes and median priced subdivision housing are also desirable.

Called the “Garden in the Sun” the city is renown for its friendliness. Old-fashioned Little League games draw the small town out into the warm weather. Community members are protective of the small town atmosphere; neighbors smile and wave as they walk through the city’s safe neighborhoods. Recent development efforts have produced positive results; Arvin is a popular relocation area for commuters, families and businesses.
