Surrounded by the eastern edge of the coastal mountain range, Coalinga is a small town located in the central valley, just an hour outside Fresno and within thirty to forty-five minutes drive from Hanford, Lemoore and Visalia. Named for the letter and mining station name it once maintained, Coalinga is a product of the mining stop “Coaling Station A.” The city’s quaint Baker Museum commemorates the historical beginnings of the city with artifacts, antiques and replica displays. Interestingly, the city’s entrance is marked by a number of oil pumps painted to resemble various characters; it is affectionately referred to as the “iron zoo.”

Coalinga is located just off of I-5 corridor; a great deal of corporate development has occurred over the last few years. An 40 acre industrial park within the city, in addition to an $8 million airway ensures that Coalinga will continue to grow, economically.

Home to one of the most popular restaurants in the valley, Coalinga’s Harris Ranch is a mainstay. Harris Ranch Beef Company has operated in the fertile area since 1937, and has since become on of the biggest beef producers in the valley. The brick path to Harris Ranch Restaurant is shaded by the numerous palm trees that cover the property. Fine quality beef is the restaurant’s specialty and it doesn’t disappoint.

Coalinga is served by the Coalinga Unified School District. The small town enjoys quiet, walkable streets; many of the city’s children are able to walk to school. The city’s beautiful two story high school was first established in 1910. The area has its own satellite of the State Community College district, called West Hills.

The area offers many affordable housing options. New custom development has meshed easily with the older ranch-style homes, farmhouses, and historic homes in the area. One of the Victorian homes still standing within the city, Baker Bed and Breakfast, offers a unique alternative to the city’s other lodging.

May marks the time for the city’s unique festival: The Horned Toad Derby. Horned toad races, a carnival, Fireman’s water fight, and other events ensure that locals and tourists are entertained. Small and serene, the city of Coalinga maintains a certain proud independence from the other areas of the Valley. Conveniently, it is less than an hour away from several fashion malls and entertainment options. A small town atmosphere has fostered close community ties. Locals crowd the city’s sports events in support, gather together for picnics and potlucks and join together on important issues. A city amidst rapid growth and development, Coalinga’s commitment to friendly, small town living is a benefit likely to go unchanged.
