Once poised as a junction for the San Joaquin Valley and San Francisco lines of the Santa Fe railroad, the city of Corcoran has sat nestled in the Central Valley since before 1914, the year it was incorporated. The city is located next to the Tulare Lake Basin, and as a result, boasts great fertility. The area’s strong agricultural roots are still evident; the city has most abundant crops include onions, tomatoes, alfalfa and wheat.

The city is proud of being a place where families can safely raise their children; with four playgrounds and nine parks, the city offers a number of recreational opportunities. Other popular sources of entertainment are the local skate park, the recently renovated water slide and community pool, and sports. Tennis courts, a baseball diamond, soccer fields, and racquetball courts keep the area’s children and sports-minded content.

Unlike some of the other Central Valley cities, Corcoran is served by an AMTRAK passenger train; the city six northbound and six southbound trains pass through the city daily. In 1989, the state’s biggest prison was built in Corcoran and now serves a major employer, employing over 1500 people from the surrounding areas. Corcoran is home to the J.G. Boswell Company, the country’s largest cotton producer. Established in 1921, the company is often called the “largest privately held farming venture” in the U.S.

A number of annual events offer residents something to do throughout the year. Every year, business compete against each other, transforming a plain, white-clothed table into a table to service eight with dishes, flowers, etc. Locals peruse the tables before the winner is announced. The Cotton Festival remains a local favorite as they crowd Whitley Avenue in anticipation of the parade. Other events like the SpringFest and Bike Show, and Stix and Flicks Outdoor Concerts and Movies in the summer, mean abundant opportunities to foster small community ties. For the latter, community members crowd the lovely Christmas Tree Park with their lawn chairs and refreshments to enjoy music and a movie with their friends and family. SpringFest is a community-wide street celebration scheduled on or around St. Patrick’s day; community members enjoy beer tasting in the midst of a temperate spring holiday, a benefit of living in the Central Valley’s Mediterranean climate.

Corcoran housing remains among the most affordable in the state; Victorian homes, large ranch-style homes and upscale and moderately priced housing subdivisions are among the many offerings available to Corcoran residents.
