Amid a self-proclaimed renaissance, Parlier has seen extensive development over the past few years. City officials proudly announced that Parlier was recently designated a Federal Rural Renewal Community. The city expects the designation to spur their recent revitalization efforts through federal tax incentives.
A small, rural city Parlier offers the convenience of proximity to local commuters and is posed to become one of the many “sleeper communities” in the Central Valley. Just about twenty minutes from Fresno and mere minutes from the many smaller suburbs, Parlier offers a comfortable, small town alternative to the area’s bigger cities.
Parlier is named for the I.N Parlier family that migrated there at the end of the 19th century. The small city was centered around Fresno St., where the Parlier family’s trading post, general store and post office were located. While the area’s first families originally grew wheat, with the assistance of the fertile valley soil, the crops soon grew to include an abundance of tree fruit, grapes and raisins. The city retained its agricultural prowess and proudly ships some of its crops around the world.
A small city on the verge of substantial growth, Parlier’s commitment to growth and change is evident. With just over 12,000 people living with in its boundaries, Parlier’s residential development is increasing. Housing remains very affordable and boasts the availability of both country and urban living. Recent changes in the city’s planning policies have resulted in substantial increases in lot sizes designed to attract upscale housing development. The city’s recently allotted 297-acre industrial park will likely bring even more commercial development given its convenient location and proximity to Highway 99, the primary means of travel throughout the valley.
Parlier is served by the Parlier Unified School District. Established sometime around 1903, the district has served the city for the last 135 years. The district oversees four schools: an elementary school, a junior high school and a high school. The district offers a number of community programs for its students, among them the Valley Regional Occupational Program. Recent bond measures have ensured that modernization efforts and programs will continue for students in the area. The University of California houses its largest off-campus agricultural research facility in Parlier at the Kearney Agricultural Center; the center strives to provide up to date research on some of agriculture’s hottest issues. The center is visited by scientists all the world and employees roughly 125 employees hailing from throughout the U.C. system.
