Founded in 1887, the town was named for Joseph Sanger, the Treasurer and Secretary of Railroad Yardmasters Association. Although Mr. Sanger never visited Sanger personally, the town was named in honor of him by a few of his railroad official friends. Sanger was once host to the “longest flume in the world,” a necessary tool for the active lumber business it once maintained.

One of the area’s most well-attended events is the annual Blossom Trail Festival and Run. The event celebrates the time of year when blossoms stretch through the rural roads of the city, the beauty of the tiny pink and white flowers only partially in competition with the flowery smell. Easiest one of the prettiest sights to see in the entire state, the city “goes pink” February through March. Only a few minutes from Fresno, Sanger’s expansive rural homes take advantage of the scenery, while recently constructed developments offer newer homes. One of the area’s most popular restaurants, The Chuck Wagon, pays tribute to the simplest of foods: the chili dog; the area’s locals will admit to driving from the neighboring cities to enjoy the simple, but delicious comfort food.

During the summer the city hosts a myriad of free events- offering the city’s children a safe, and active means of enjoying the warm summer. T-ball, youth nights, a mobile skate park, recreation programs, organized field trips are only a few of the events offered.

Every year at Halloweeen, children crowd downtown to participate in the Halloween Trick or Treating Party. Churches, parents, and businesses provide candy to the hundreds of children while parents enjoy the food and booths of local businesses. Affectionately referred to as the “Christmas Tree City,” Sanger’s moniker reflects the city’s annual trek, as a community, to Grant Tree, a giant redwood over 2,000 years old every year at Christmas. Attended by thousands of people every year, a holiday dinner or lunch is also offered.

The City of Sanger has made considerable efforts to increase the green factor—altering city employee’s work schedules to allow for decreased emissions, purchases green products when possible, and working on retrofitting the city vehicles with emission reducing equipment. There are even plans for a biodeisel plant in Sanger in the future. Sanger’s appreciation of the environment seems most appropriate given its number of eco-friendly festivals and traditions. A small town with big plans, Sanger is a city with great potential.
