Under the dense shade of the pine trees of the Sierra National Forest, a small, two lane road curves through the mountains. Through the impacted trees, momentary glimpses of smoking fireplaces reveal the best that the Central Valley has to offer: cozy, mountain living at over 5,000 feet. Stopping at the tiny roadside knick-knack and coffee shop will not only ensure that patrons can take the edge off the cool mountain air with a delicious cup of coffee, but also that they see the friendly service and conversation the small town is know for. Adorable restaurants- pizza shops, hot dog stands and ice cream parlors- are clustered along the side of the road. The mountain town sees a massive number of tourists; rental cabins, campsites and a locally-owned bed and breakfast ensure that Shaver continues to be economically viable, and a center for tourism.
Whether the draw of Shaver lies in its ability to offer a refuge from the warm temperatures of the Central Valley, or the warmness of its hospital locals is unclear. The possibilities are endless: the town borders beautiful Shaver Lake, offering any number of water-sporting opportunities; in the winter, snowy Shaver draws families, snow tubes in tow, and skiers by the dozens. While home prices are higher than much of the Valley, the exceptional homes (among them, log cabins, custom mountain homes, and luxurious lakefront estates) and beautiful scenery justify increased home values.
Named for the lumberman, C.B. Shaver, one of the first pioneers of the area, Shaver’s nearby lake is used to garner electricity by a local power company through a network of tunnels and power systems. Once, a mere millpond that locals damned to support local logging efforts, the lake has been transformed into a recreational hotspot. Boaters and fisherman enjoy year round access to the lake; many of the properties abutting the lake allow for morning canoe rides at sunrise. At the base of the mountain, nearby towns Auberry, Prather and Tollhouse, offer some compromise to rustic living. Around just 2,000 feet elevation, the small towns offer large lots perfect for horse lovers and those that enjoy country living. Everything from log cabins to multi-million dollar mansions are located amid the sunny, grassy area.
Shaver and the surrounding area offer an endless array of events: pancake breakfasts, car shows, ice cream socials, a Scottish fishing derby, sled races, a crab feeds and much more.
